Sixty-year-old Classical guitar player Ruben Romero died in Santa Fe, NM on February 20 leaving behind a legacy of enchanting musical talent.

The musician performed regularly at the both the Eldorado Hotel and the Taos Inn in Santa Fe to the delight of captivated crowds. Romero fan Peter Chorlton said of his experiences with the musician, “The times I was fortunate [enough] to see him perform I was struck by his humble, friendly, and happy demeanor. He really seemed to love what he was.”

His musical talent first sparked at age 14 when Romero accompanied his older brother, a flamenco dancer. From there, he traveled to Spain and studied with guitar masters Andrés Segovia and Paco de Lucía. Aside from performing, Romero taught guitar lessons and was a helpful inspiration to new artists in the New Mexico area.

Romero’s professional career included two albums produced by New Earth Records that include the holiday album “Christmas in Santa Fe.” New Earth co-owner Waduda Paradiso said, “Ruben was so full of life and passion and strength, while at the same time a gentle heart. He is a master of the flamenco guitar and his spirit will always be here with us in the sky and the mountain of the land of enchantment”

Romero will, no doubt, be missed. Santa Fe resident Scott Wiseman said, “Like many Santa Feans, Ruben Romero touched my life. His songs captured the vibrancy of our city and culture and when I think of New Mexico, Ruben always comes to mind. I must thank Ruben for the beautiful music he has left for the world. He will continue to live in our hearts.” ###
