The workshop will give students a taster for working in a creative, design and print environment and a more comprehensive understanding of the publishing process, alongside the chance to learn new skills to help complete their project. The project covers areas depicted within the National Literacy Strategy and is an important part of the Year 6 curriculum.

The Hive Creative will host the 30 children and their teachers for the workshop from its Kingston based office. During the visit the students will learn about the publishing process from start to finish and will use their own project newsletter as a working example of how everything is put together. They will be split into groups and taken through aspects of the publishing process including page layout, copy editing, photo retouching, design and production by the staff of the Hive Creative.

During the visit, The Hive Creative will have the student’s projects printed so they each have a momento of the day and the new skills they have acquired.

“Our aim is to remove the barriers to learning and find creative ways to teach our students, both inside and outside school, that appeal to both their age and interests” said Sue McKinney (Year 6 teacher). “The workshop with The Hive Creative will give our students a chance to complete their Year 6 project and to learn some new and valuable life skills, and experience what it is like to work within a creative environment”.

Simon Warmer, The Hive Creative’s managing director, comments: “This is a great chance for young kids to experience what it is like to work in a creative environment and to open their minds to the opportunities beyond the traditional industries. We also hope they’ll have great fun and try out some new skills while they are with us.”
