"My sculptures are meditations on the human and animal
condition in the modern world, reflecting loss and
tragedy, hope and delight and above all, tenacity of spirit."

David Backhouse FRBS FRSA RWA has a career in sculpture spanning more than
30 years. His work is well known through exhibitions, he has an international following of collectors for his smaller bronzes and portrait heads and his many public sculptures have drawn wide acclaim.

His latest work, the Animals in War Memorial, was seven years in the making from the original concept to the finished monument. His design was chosen as the clear winner in
a fierce competition among 40 sculptors selected to submit their ideas for the commission. It was unveiled by the Princess Royal in a moving ceremony last November and has already become a well-loved and much-visited landmark in central London.

The Sladmore Gallery exhibition will present buyers with the unique opportunity to acquire the artist's maquettes used as the models and inspiration for the work. Destined to become collectors' items, they will be offered alongside other recent sculptures from his studio at Lullington, near Bath.

About The Sladmore Gallery

The Sladmore Gallery has its origins in a private collection of nineteenth-century bronze animal sculpture, assembled by Jane Horswell in the mid-1950s at Sladmore Farm in Buckinghamshire.

In 1968 the Gallery moved to a three-floor mews premises off Berkeley Square, where it is still located today in the heart of London's gallery district.

Since 1985 under the direction of Gerry Farrell and Edward Horswell, the Sladmore Gallery has increasingly concentrated on fine casts of nineteenth and early twentieth century bronzes as well as representing a small stable of contemporary artists.
