MSTAR and the Daily Herald Launch Utah County News Channel
(
PRLEAP.COM) MSTAR and the Daily Herald, Utah County’s local newspaper, will launch a 24-hour local news channel this week as part of a continuing effort to provide better service to the people of Utah County.
MSTAR, Utah’s largest and fastest-growing fiber-optic service provider, has agreed to supply the channel to the Daily Herald to allow local news to be broadcast throughout the valley. The channel – Daily Herald Television (DH-TV) – is available exclusively through MSTAR on channel 74.
“We’re excited to be working with a well-known, established and respected newsgathering organization,” said Paul Venturella, MSTAR’s director of video services.
Venturella said MSTAR wanted to provide an outlet for Utah County-based news because other news sources are based in Salt Lake.
“It’s a unique opportunity for people to get local news,” he said.
The Daily Herald’s executive editor Randy Wright said the newspaper has a variety of programs planned, including a BYU sports show, a history program, and profiles of local community members and businesses.
“The staff is excited,” he said. “We’re not going to have all the bells and whistles of a full-fledged TV station, but what we are going to have is really solid local news, which is what we’ve always done.”
Many Daily Herald staff members have degrees in broadcast journalism. Wright said reporters will write their own stories for broadcast and read them from TelePrompTers. A short video news segment can be seen at the top of every even hour during the day. He said the newspaper also has partnerships with UVSC and BYU and will work with interns and production classes to produce video content.
“We’re open to just about anything,” he said. “We’re even thinking about a dating show.”
Venturella said the working relationship between the Daily Herald and MSTAR has been positive and Wright said he hopes MSTAR will continue to grow.
“We’d like to see MSTAR succeed,” Wright said. “The more the audience grows, the more we can fulfill our mission of serving the community.”
MSTAR’s president and chief executive officer Ben Gould said the channel’s production studio, built in the Daily Herald building, and local angle will be a valuable addition to MSTAR’s program lineup.
“This is an exciting development for people who live in Utah County,” Gould said. “We’ve always believed that local news is best covered by local news reporters and we’re confident the Daily Herald will be able to pool their resources to bring a fantastic service to people all over the valley.”
Daily Herald Television will also air on channel 19.
