TIP ACADEMY AND EAGER SCHOLARS HOSTS TEACHER INSTITUTE
(PRLEAP.COM) Encinitas — TIP Academy Charter School will be hosting a Teacher Institute on the school campus, Friday, April 13. The Institute is designed as a training program for both novice and advanced teachers, and offers them the opportunity to observe curriculum standards being taught to children in primary and upper elementary classrooms.
In order for the program to succeed the school asked for pupil volunteers to give up an afternoon of their Spring Break to come in and go to school. The response was overwhelming, with over 85 students volunteering, including some children who are enrolled to start next year. “This is the first of many teacher institutes that we plan to offer at the TIP Charter School as we are developing a Teaching Research Center alongside of our charter school. We are enthusiastic about the demonstration classes as they are a first in county workshops offering teacher training. It is truly showing ‘theory in our practice’ of teaching GATE standards to all students”, said Deborah Hazleton.
The program, “Observations of the Theory Into Practice at TIP Academy” – will allow less experienced teachers to observe actual classes being taught in topics such as Depth, Complexity, Think Like a Disciplinarian, Universal Concepts, Big Ideas, Critical and Creative Thinking with Content Standards. More experienced teachers will observe “beyond depth and complexity” the art of criticism, the use of context to accelerate learning, new problem solving strategies across the disciplines and the concept of dabbling. After the observation portion of the Institute, there will be briefing and debriefing sessions. Teachers from all over California have registered to attend.
The curriculum being taught at the School has been developed primarily in collaboration with world renowned educator, Sandra Kaplan who trains teachers throughout the country. The Institute is being offered in association with California Association for the Gifted (CAG), a non-profit organization whose members include parents, educators, and community members who are interested in providing differentiated curriculum focused on the special needs of gifted children.
Following the Friday event, additional programs are being offered Saturday April 14, at the Radisson Hotel in La Jolla, including further Teachers Seminars and Workshops, and a Parent Seminar that will focus on the characteristics of educating gifted students and how to extend these elements into the home with parents as educators.
The California Association for the Gifted (CAG) Teacher and Parent Institute is being held in San Diego on April 13th and 14th. For more information or to register for these programs, please see www.cagifted.org.
