Doll Repair Ebook Sells More Than 100 Copies

The doll community has shown interest in the idea of do-it-yourself doll repair. Katharine Swan’s instructions ebook, How to Restring a Strung Doll, has now sold more than 100 copies.

The instructions booklet has been for sale on eBay since late October. Recently, Ms. Swan decided to start selling the ebook from her own website. She launched the ebook’s sales site as a subdomain to her own successful website, www.katharineswan.com.

“At first, I wasn’t sure if there would be enough of a market for this type of information,” says Ms. Swan. “But the response was an overwhelming ‘yes.’ So I decided the ebook should have a webpage of its own.”

The ebook started out as assignment for a technical writing class several years ago. After the class ended, the instructions sat on Ms. Swan’s hard drive for more than a year before she thought of making them into an ebook.

“I had toyed with the idea of printing the booklet and selling it online, but I didn’t have the equipment to make a professional binding,” says Ms. Swan. “Then about six months ago, I read about one author having a lot of luck selling their ebook on eBay. So I decided to try it.”

Ms. Swan revised the ebook, reformatted it as a PDF, and started offering it for sale on eBay. The response was overwhelmingly positive: buyers loved the detailed instructions, photo illustrations, and the rapid virtual delivery. They also loved the price: At $2.99, what’s not to love?

“I guess I could have charged more if I’d wanted to,” laughs Ms. Swan. “But I don’t mind. I love hearing buyers rave about what a good deal they got, and how helpful my instructions were.”
