Working in the field as a business leader, teacher and manager, Annmarie Edwards gained insight as to how HR managers can build a sustainable workforce. She has authored 50 Tips to Energize Your Workforce to help HR managers build and increase their workforce productivity. Edwards say, “The recent killing that took place at Virginia Technical College is a wake up call for leaders to become more in sync with their workforce. Building connection with workers from the onset can help prevent a national crisis that we are presently experiencing.”

Edwards offers these tips from her book 50 Tips To Energize Your Workforce:

Build Connections

1. Build bridges. The formation of a strong social network is vital to building connections within staff. A social network has many benefits such as increased productivity, improved communication, and a greater commitment from employees.

2. A personal touch goes a long way. Employers can build connections with employees by encouraging an open communication policy, making eye contact, and interacting with staff members on a daily basis.

3. Lend an ear. An open door policy enables employees to talk to management freely about work-related matters without feeling intimidated.

4. Connect via communication. Create connections between management and employees through positive verbal communication. Managers can give inspirational talks and express gratitude for a job well done.

Problem Solve

5. Meet challenges head-on. It is imperative for leaders to resolve issues as soon as they arise. Procrastinating or “passing the buck” only compounds the problem. Problem solving can be best accomplished following these steps:

a) Gather facts to determine what the problem is.

b) After the investigation is complete, get others involved by asking them to brainstorm solutions.

c) Ask leaders and staff to create solutions together to find a middle ground where everyone feels comfortable.
