The Mall, the UK’s leading community shopping centre brand with 23 malls across the UK, has awarded a £6m single national cleaning contract, MallClean, to OCS Cleaning. MallClean, the partnership between OCS and The Mall, will offer services to customers and retailers which ensures both high quality cleaning and offers enhanced value for money.

It was the innovative approach which OCS took that perfectly complemented the MallClean objective to deliver a forward thinking approach to cleaning which is tailored to each Mall’s individual requirements. This way of working will enable The Mall to develop an industry leading operational platform to which any future additional Mall can be added to the contract with relative ease.

OCS and MallClean will utilise the latest cleaning equipment technology to maximise productivity and deliver the highest possible standards. Micro-fibre cleaning systems will significantly reduce chemical usage, in line with The Mall’s objectives under EnviroMall*. As well as providing daily Mall cleaning services, MallClean will provide food court table cleaning, periodic window and high-level cleaning, escalator cleaning, car park cleaning and the provision of all toilet consumables, cleaning equipment and materials.

Further innovations include the move to daytime cleaning and the introduction of the ‘CleanSmart®’ system during 2008 which will see the gradual introduction of more efficient ways of working. ‘CleanSmart®’, is a highly structured and consistent approach to building cleaning developed by California-based Sierra Environmental Technologies and proven in use across 40 million square feet of commercial premises in the USA.

Ken Ford chief executive of The Mall, comments: “Not only is this partnership beneficial for our retailers and customers who will notice the difference in the Malls but it will also empower our people, who are core to our success. The development of the Mall-based cleaning teams is a key objective of MallClean, which in working with OCS, we are able to deliver at a national level.”

Alan Wiggan, of the Mall who has worked closely with OCS explains: “Via an enhanced competency and skills assessment system, cleaning staff will be provided with a targeted training programme to ensure they have the skills and knowledge to provide an excellent service. The retention of good cleaning staff is also vital with increased pay and benefits planned to coincide with the introduction of the ‘CleanSmart®’ system.”

Chris Cracknell, chief executive of OCS, which provides services from cleaning and catering to security and engineering support, in four continents, said, “This contract places great trust in the quality and integrity of OCS Cleaning as well as providing an ideal platform to launch a totally new approach to cleaning strategies and delivery in the UK. I congratulate our team on this achievement and look forward to the ongoing success of the MallClean concept.”
