Exhibit by Two Southern Black Artists Portray Civil Rights Era and Contemporary South

(PRLEAP.COM) Avisca Fine Art Gallery exhibits the work of two emerging Southern artists June 15 – 29, 2007. The exhibition will feature recent mixed media paintings by Atlanta artist Charly Palmer and Greenville, SC artist April Harrison.

Charly Palmer has created a highly original body of work centered around the Civil Rights movement of the late fifties and sixties and tells stories of the prejudice, pride and defiance that defined the era in African American history, particularly in the South. His bold narrative style which utilizes collaging of news accounts and incorporates the graphic racial language of the time may cause some discomfort to the viewer. For the artist, though, his work is not meant to serve as recriminations, but to inspire an appreciation of the struggles and the triumph.

April Harrison’s sweetly sentimental and colorful collaged paintings, by contrast, imagine how things could be in a world where old-fashioned values and virtues are redeemed. She focuses primarily on relationships – the comfort of long-term unions, the security of family and the camaraderie of the group. Her mosaic use of color evokes nature in its most embracing form - like a warm quilt on a cold night.

All works on exhibit will be available for sale.

A wine and cheese reception will open the exhibition at the gallery from 6 to 9 pm and it is open to the public.

The gallery is located at 507 Roswell Street, near the quaint downtown square of Marietta, Georgia. Gallery hours are Wednesday – Saturday 12 pm to 6 pm, or by appointment.
