The KRI standardized system measures how well a company is building durable advantage and provides overall and detailed ratings across nine competitive moats by analyzing consumer responses. In 2005 Books A Million scored a summary moat rating of 3M. 2006 ratings show that Books A Million scores a 4M in both the economies of skill moat and channel lock out moat. Books A Million is a distant third of the largest bookstore chains. Despite tough competition, they have carved out a niche to compete effectively against larger rivals, and is the best positioned book retailer in terms of developing competitive advantage.
