Mama Said There'd Be Days Like This Contest Winners Announced
(
PRLEAP.COM) A 54- year-old Ohio mother and author captured the hearts of the celebrity judges with her entry in the Mama Said There’d Be Days Like This essay writing contest. Debra Shiveley Welch, author of the book Jesus Gandhi Oma Mae Adams, was among more than 150 people who submitted entries. In 800 words or less, participants were asked to write about a warning their mother gave them when they were younger but they failed to listen to the advice. Later on, however, they discovered their mother had been right all along.
The first annual contest was sponsored by baby boomer author Beverly Mahone of North Carolina and Internet Radio Host Rebecca White of Ohio, two work-at-home-moms, who decided to join forces after connecting online. Between the two of them they solicited over $1000 in prizes for five winners and were even able to enlist the services of celebrity judges: two-time super bowl champion Dwight Hicks (San Francisco 49ers), gospel recording artist Jennifer Evans and best selling author Linda J. Alexander.
Debra’s essay was about a past love and a warning her mother gave her about actions speaking louder than words. Upon learning she had won, her response was “I absolutely can’t believe it! I really and truly did not think I would. Not because of the quality of my writing…simply because of the subject.” As the grand prize winner, Debra won over $500 in cash and prizes, including a thirty minute interview on Heal Yourself Talk Radio with co-sponsor White. Other winners in order of finish were: Teresa Hearl of MD; Nando Amabile, MD; Carine Nadel, CA; Ruth Squires, MI.
Mahone, author of the book Whatever! A Baby Boomer’s Journey Into Middle Age, says she was pleasantly surprised at the large number of baby boomers who entered the contest. “The top five finalists were all born somewhere between 1946 and 1964, which I guess means, we rock!”
