A Princeton resident and registered medium with the famed spiritualist center Lily Dale Assembly in western New York, "Dr. Lauren" has been featured several books and documentaries about mediumship. Her own book, Natural-Born Intuition: How to Awaken & Develop Your Inner Wisdom (2004, Career Press/New Page Books), was hailed by James Van Praagh. Thibodeau has also been on John Edward's recommended mediums list since 1999.

"I've always been able to connect with the subtle energies of those who've passed on. It's a wonderful way to help others understand that love lives on," Thibodeau, who holds a Ph.D. in counseling, said.

She believes that everyone has capacity for connecting with the 'other side,' but acknowledges that some people have more natural ability for mediumship.

"Life events can also enhance the ability to perceive spiritual energy. In my doctoral research on near-death experiences, I found that depending on the study, as many as 100% of those who've nearly died report enhanced psychic abilities afterward," Thibodeau said, noting that touching an improperly grounded appliance at age 5 nearly killed her. "A second near-death experience at age 21 made my psychic abilities even stronger."

Thibodeau resisted her natural inclinations toward professional psychic work until 1989.

"My family encouraged me toward engineering, so I accepted a full scholarship in that field, and graduated with a degree in economics. Later I earned an MBA and a MEd, as well as a PhD. I'd been working as a psychic for several years before returning to graduate school in counseling. Several of my professors were very encouraging of this work, which isn't that surprising. Carl Jung was fascinated by mediumship; his mother practiced it. Sigmund Freud wrote a paper on telepathy, and William James also was noted for his interest in this area," Thibodeau said.

"I'm probably the most logical psychic medium you'll ever meet. My book was called an intuition book for logical people, and that's a very apt decription," Thibodeau said.

"This ability is not as unusual as people may think. In fact, most people who lose a loved one report feeling that that person has communicated to them in some way, often through dreams," Thibodeau said.

"People might expect an event like this to be dreary and sad, but it's really quite powerful and positive. They don't lose their sense of humor on the other side," Thibodeau, who also performs standup comedy, said.

"I've been taking classes and workshops for over a year. It's a great release because in my work, I could easily be overwhelmed by sadness. I work with police detectives, 9/11 survivors, bereaved parents—all sorts of people who are grieving. And yet, this work is the most rewarding and joyful of anything I've ever done," Thibodeau said. "I can't imagine life without spiritual connection, and that's what I bring to people in Messages from the Other Side."
