Hearing on Employment Eligibility Verification System conducted

(PRLEAP.COM) The Subcommittee on Social Security under the Committee on Ways and Means conducted its hearing of the present and proposed systems for verification of employment eligibility. The schedule was announced earlier by Congressman Michael R. McNulty who is the present chairman of the Subcommittee. The hearing took place on Thursday, June 7, 2007. The location of the hearing was in the B-318 room of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearings started at 10:00 in the morning.

Los Angeles, California, June 7, 2007- Due to the limited time available to have a hearing of witnesses, the Subcommittee conducted an oral testimony for the hearing among exclusively invited witnesses. However, the subcommittee still welcomed and encouraged organizations or individuals they have not invited to submit written statements. Some were considered by the Subcommittee to be included in the hearing’s printed record.

McNulty was recorded as declaring this statement during the earlier announcement of the hearing: “If employment eligibility verification is to be a key enforcement tool for immigration policy, we must ensure the system is effective, efficient and feasible. We need better understanding of the possible consequences and impact on the Social Security Administration if they are to undertake this expanded responsibility without compromising their core mission of administering Social Security.”


It also discussed updated systems interaction with the REAL ID and other identification systems, and the consequences of imposing a privacy policy. Regarding the latter, the proposals for data sharing arrangement between the agencies were discussed particularly.

• Richard Stana – the Government Accountability Office’s Director of Homeland Security and Justice

• Tyler Moran of the National Immigration Law Center based in Idaho. He is the Employment Policy Director.

• Angelo I. Amador - U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Director of Immigration Policy

• Sue Meisinger representative from organization The Human Resource Initiative for a Legal Workforce, Society for Human Resource Management based in Alexandria, Virginia

• Marc Rotenberg - Electronic Privacy Information Center’s Executive Director
