PLACENCIA, Belize – June 8, 2007 Kanantik Reef and Jungle Resort in Belize (http://www.kanantik.com) announces new arrangements to provide its guest the opportunity to dive with whale sharks. While Kanantik Reef and Jungle Resort recently stop providing direct tours and trips to dive with the whale sharks, the resort has recently made arrangements with other tour operators, divemasters, and guides to provide comprehensive trips to nearby Gladden Spit so that guests at Kanantik can be provided this once in a lifetime opportunity and still be able to enjoy the luxurious setting and atmosphere of Kanantik Reef and Jungle Resort. When making your reservation at Kanantik please let the resort staff know that you are also interested in arranging a dive trip to see the world’s largest fish, the whale shark.

Belize is one of the few places in the world where scuba divers can spot the whale shark. The whale shark can grow up to 60 feet in length, weigh in excess of 15 tons, and dive to depths of 700 metres (2,300 ft). During the months of March, April, May, and June, whale sharks migrate off the southern coast of Belize. These giants of the sea are harmless filter feeders and are a favorite among scuba divers who come from all over the world to Belize for a once in a lifetime opportunity to swim among these friendly and inquisitive giants.

Veteran diver and co-owner of Kanantik Reef and Jungle Resort, Roberto Fabbri, stated that for 3 days before and 7 days after a full moon, during the spring months, the whale shark can be most easily spotted. Roberto Fabbri has done extensive diving with the whale sharks and has copyrighted underwater photography of the whale sharks. “During these lunar cycles millions of snappers (dog and cubera snapper in particular) mate and spawn. The opportunistic whale sharks travel great distances to snack upon these large and tasty eggs before diving back down into the hidden depths of the sea”, said Mr. Fabbri.

A reef cut called Gladden Spit, which has a steep sandy bank pushing out into very deep sea, is the most notable place for divers to spot the whale shark during this feeding period. In fact much of this area has been designated as a marine reserve by the government of Belize for this reason. Gladden Spit lies towards the southern end of the Belizean barrier reef, directly east of Placencia and within easy reach from the shores of Kanantik Reef and Jungle Resort (http://www.kanantik.com).

If diving with world’s largest fish is more than what you want to bite off, Kanantik offers adventure seekers and nature lovers alike scuba diving trips among the southern coral reefs of South Water Caye where you will experience the spectacular spectrum of underwater color that over 65 coral species and 300 species of fish provide.

Kanantik Reef and Jungle Resort is the only beachfront resort on the Belize mainland that is situated on a picturesque 300 acres of pristine jungle up against the beautiful azul waters of the Caribbean. Kanantik is also the only all-inclusive eco-sensitive Belize resort designed to offer the best of both the Belizean sea and jungle.
