The Federal Trade Commission has estimated approximately one identity theft being reported every 19 minutes. If you happen to be among the fortunate few who haven't encountered identity theft, you may wonder about it. It is basically when a person's details like name, date of birth, social security number, etc are used for illegal purposes.

It could easily happen to you. Say, suppose your phone rings and you are asked to pay past due accounts for expenses you never indulged in. Your checks are refused at the supermarket due to past experience of bouncing, when you have always been particular about timely bill payments. You might just be a victim of stolen identity. To guard yourself from this possibility, instructions have been compiled in Guide to Preventing Identity Theft that you need to keep in mind.

Always use caution in revealing personal information over the phone, in mail or Internet and never give out your card number, Social Security number or any other details if you have the slightest doubt. Thieves can get hold of your personal details by going through your trash or recycling bin. So always make sure you shred all charge receipts, credit applications, insurance forms, bank statements, expired charge cards and pre approved credit offers. Outgoing mail should only be deposited in post office collection boxes or the local post office. Make sure you empty your mailbox after every delivery.
