COLUMBUS, Ohio –– A Cleveland, Ohio-area antique dealer will offer a rare mahogany breakfront once housed in the Harvard University Art Museum at an online auction this month accessible by antique enthusiasts and collectors from around the world.
Only truly discriminating buyers of fine antiques will bid on this piece and other high-end items ranging in value from $2,000 to $100,000 when GoAntiques.com holds its next “Select Showcase” auction on May 22 at 4 p.m. EDT. (www.goantiques.com)
Fred and Mary Bentoff, owners of Shaker Square Antiques, 12733 Larchmere Blvd. in Shaker Height along with their daughter, Raleigh Corto, will be auctioning off the George III provincial breakfront cabinet dating 1760, which was acquired one year ago. The antiques shop opened in 1971.
Other period pieces to be offered to the highest bidders include a rare Regency brass inlaid writing table made of tulip and rosewood, circa. 1829-1830, and a rosewood and brass folding card table with gold inlay, circa. 1870.
This is not the first time the Bentoffs have struck gold online. In an earlier GoAntiques.com Select Showcase, their shop sold a set of exquisite Regency chairs for $15,000. They also offered a pair of English coach scene pencil drawings, circa 1800s, from the estate of Leonard Bernstein at a second auction called “Fabulous Findings”on GoAntiques.com.
Introduced for the first time on March 13, the Select Showcase was an instant success with dealers, collectors and consumers who bid on $3.3 million in art, antiques and collectibles.
“Select Showcase offers only the crème de la crème of the more than 400,000 items on GoAntiques.com,” said Jim Kamnikar, president and chief operating officer. “Select Showcase features individually selected high-quality antiques, collectibles and luxury items from our Antiques and Estate Items merchandise categories. Select Showcase is a must see for the avid collector.”
Anyone who registers for the auction can bid. For anyone wishing to leave an absentee bid, items can be viewed in preview 24 hours a day until the day before the auction at www.goantiques.com. Most merchandise is priced in the $5,000 to $10,000 range.
“While Select Showcase was created for the discriminating buyer, anyone who enjoys viewing truly fine merchandise will find this special auction of interest,” Kamnikar added. “GoAntiques has long been known as a key online destination for quality art and antiques. Select Showcase makes it easier for shoppers focusing on higher end merchandise by bringing items together in a central online location for easy viewing and bidding.”
Kamnikar said more than 1,700 dealers from around the world regularly post antique merchandise and participate in multiple auctions covering categories such as art, glass, pottery, ceramics, fine furniture, lighting fixtures, jewelry and decorative accessories.
