NORFOLK, Vir. – Fans and admirers of famed tennis star Arthur Ashe will be thrilled to see his life so accurately portrayed in a new docu-drama set to debut May 29.

Ashe broke down barriers in the world of tennis just as Jackie Robinson did in baseball. He left a lasting legacy and is remembered as a true athlete, always a gentleman, and a fierce competitor. He was also passionate about the causes he promoted, and was a business professional.

All those sides of Ashe and more are accurately portrayed in the film “Arthur! A Celebration of Life: The Life Story of Tennis Great Arthur Ashe …a Spiritual Journey.” The film was conceived, produced, and directed by Joe James, Jr. James also plays Ashe convincingly in the film.

The versatile and talented James also wrote much of the music in the film, including one song performed by nine-time Grammy Award winner Alicia Keys entitled "The Life."

James will be on hand for the premier of the new film at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 29 at the Nauticus National Maritime Center, One Waterside Drive, Norfolk, Vir. A red-carpet reception will follow the presentation of the film.

The premier is being sponsored by the South Eastern Virginia Arts Association and Stage Norfolk, Inc. as part of the 2005 Afr'am Festival. The screening will take place only a short distance from Richmond where Ashe was born in 1943.

James was uniquely qualified for this project because he spent years as a high-level tournament tennis player, he is an accomplished actor, and has a strong resemblance to Ashe on screen.

“I wanted to capture his essence and passion for his sport and the causes he believed in, as well as his diligent, tireless work to bring about change in so many areas,” said James of his performance as Ashe.

“This project was a true labor of love, because all the actors, singers, and crew members donated their talents to the making of this tribute,” explained James. “This is an independent project, and I’m glad that I was able to produce and direct it, and be featured as my idol.”

James has excelled professionally in so many ways. He has performed as an actor in a variety of television shows, a looping actor in over 30 films, a screenplay writer, and a singer and lyricist.

Tickets for this screening are purchased at the door for $10.00. There is no advance purchase. For inquiries about this screening call South Eastern Virginia Arts Association Stage Norfolk Inc. at 757-233-0413.
