Leaders From Oregon Faith Community Respond to Senator Gordon Smith’s Comments with a Letter
(Portland, OR)-Last Thursday Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR) echoed the talking points of the radical right, implying the fight over the filibuster is about keeping people of faith off the federal bench.
Sen. Smith said on the floor of the Senate, "I hear a fearful undertone, an undercurrent, that I think will bar the door to judicial service to people of faith.”
Today, a group of leaders from Oregon’s faith community are presenting a letter to Senator Smith in response to his remarks.
“We are saddened and disappointed by your remarks on the floor of the Senate last Thursday characterizing the current debate over the filibuster for judicial nominees as something that “will bar the door to judicial service to people of faith."
“As leaders in various faith communities, we do not share that point of view. We would like to tell you why, and we hope that you will reconsider your earlier remarks.”
Those endorsing the letter include leaders from the United Church of Christ, Community of Welcoming Congregations and the National Council of Jewish Women.
The letter will be presented at 1:00pm to Senator Smith at his Portland Office, Portland World Trade Center, 121 SW Salmon St.
