Spirituality: The Missing Link in Mind/Body Medicine

It is becoming increasingly apparent that the missing link in the evolution of traditional mind/body medicine, including the treatment of mental illness, may very well be the use of spirituality and religion.

Karen Ryan of Asheville, NC, knows first hand the miraculous impact that spirituality can have on the successful treatment of illness and disease.

At the age of forty three, a sudden and unexpected epiphany led Karen on a continuing series of spiritual realizations that enabled her to transform her life away from the unrelenting pain of mental illness toward a reality that is now fully embraced by healthful living. Karen was able to courageously turn a devastating illness into a triumph of healthy success!

From an early age, Karen began experiencing the trauma that is often created by mental illness from her own father’s battle with Bipolar Disorder. This trauma continued after her father’s death from cancer when she was twelve, by her new stepfather’s abusive behavior and treatment. By the time Karen was entering college, she began feeling the unrelenting impact of her own Bipolar Disorder, as well as the backlash effects from previous family dysfunction. This trend of escalading mood swings and personality disorders continued for many years, resulting in a never-ending stream of crushed hopes, failed relationships and employment instability.

Using traditional models from psychologists such as Carl Jung and core teachings from Spiritual Masters from various religious disciplines, Karen was able to realize her way to healthy living through a process that also employed personality integration and cognitive remodeling. Through a cooperative relationship with her medical doctor, Karen was completely removed from all prescription medication in just two years time and she did so without any therapy outside of her own spiritual practices.

“Mental Illness is really quite treatable through this process,” said Karen, “There isn’t much difference between spiritual alignment and re-adjusting habitual mal-adaptive thinking toward more constructive thought patterns.”
