How the launch of a new website will help people going to the beach
(
PRLEAP.COM) Interest in Britain’s beaches and coastal towns has increased dramatically in recent years and a new website,
Surfing Genie has been launched to make information on them more freely available. Surfing Genie helps beach goers to get better access to information on the beaches around the British Isles. This website not only provides full, searchable details of the beach and its facilities but also allows any service providers to list their contact details for free alongside the beach so that local information is more widely available. The website already has a rapidly growing database of surf schools, bed and breakfasts and hotels and is adding events, restaurants, cafes, pubs, clubs and other service providers over the summer.
Today people want to do more at the beach than just eat ice cream and the last decade has seen a huge increase in interest in activities at the beach, the most popular being surfing. The British Surfing Association & BBC stated in 2006 that there were over 1 million regular surfers in Britain, a figure expected to break through the 2 million mark this year.
The sport is popular because it is inclusive - walking down a beach you will pass 10 year olds walking alongside 60 year olds, both carrying surfboards. In the water the talented surfer flying past you on a wave is as likely to be a young women as a young man, the person in the wetsuit is as likely to be an investment banker as a student.
As interest in Britain’s beaches has recovered so have the local coastal economies and service industries. The British Resorts and Destinations Association reported that the number of Britons going to the seaside rose to 21 million in 2006 from 19m in 2003, spending £14bn on holidays. This spending power of visiting beach goers has changed the face of many towns with Newquay gaining its own airport and Padstowe, Watergate Bay & Illfracombe gaining restaurants with internationally famous patrons. Next year will see the completion of the UK’s first artificial surfing reef in Bournemouth.
However these increases have placed great strain on a handful of very localised areas, through a lack of knowledge of what else is available, both in terms of service providers (surf schools, restaurants, accommodation etc) and of geographic locations.
The concept behind Surfing Genie is simple: It shouldn’t take a huge amount of time trying to find the right beach, or a surf school, or an available B&B. Hopefully now with one website for all this people should be spending that time having fun on the beach or in the water.
