Targeted Diet Information for Men Lacking

June 02, 2005 (PRLEAP.COM) Health News
Mississauga, ON Males comprise the largest segment of overweight and obese people in North America, but have the fewest diet resources to remedy their situation. According to Statistics Canada, men are more likely to become obese, and low income is a risk factor. However, the majority of information regarding weight control targets women. Those publications that target men's health provide almost exclusively muscle gain information instead of fat loss articles. But a new website is offering free articles of advice for men to lose weight, Weightless Products, www.weightlessproducts.com.
Obesity is recognized by the World Health Organization as a world-wide epidemic. It is not a problem restricted to wealthy nations, as over 115 million people in developing countries also suffer from the effects of excess body fat. Obesity is a major risk factor for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and some increasingly prevalent cancers. Despite the spread of obesity and its health consequences, the worldwide view is that extra fat around the waistline is normal and acceptable in men.
The information that is easily available regarding weight loss is almost exclusively targeted at women. Although weight management strategies apply equally well to males or females, men may be embarrassed to be seen reading such sources. This also strengthens the belief that only women need worry about their weight.
Sources exist for men to learn about their health, diet and exercise, but these magazines, books and websites primarily encourage resistance training and supplementing with high doses of protein and other more risky ingredients in order to gain muscle mass. Having more muscle is a positive step, but it is not a solution for the obese man.
A new website has been launched to address this void of information. "Mr. Weigthless" (www.weightlessproducts.com) offers weight loss articles targeted at a male audience. The mascot of the site is a superhero in the tradition of those that many modern men idolized as children whose main characteristic is low body fat. All of the content is free of charge, and requires no sign-up or other conditions, so that those in the low-income risk group can take steps toward a healthier lifestyle. Articles are written in a simple but accurate language, so that the reader can take immediate action to reduce their body fat and understand how and why these strategies work.
If the worldwide epidemic of obesity can be brought under control, it will be through information targeted at its largest risk group: lower income males. Unfortunately, this is the single group most neglected by current sources in the nutrition and exercise industries. Weightless Products is taking an active leadership role to remedy this situation.
