Intermec and Newham College Bridge the UK Skills Gap with RFID Discovery Lab

Reading, Berks, 20 July 2007 – Intermec (NYSE: IN) and Newham College in east London today launch the Discovery Lab, which will provide training courses in RFID (radio frequency identification) technology. The Discovery Lab aims to be the UK’s best resource for providing RFID training and promoting uptake of the technology. Intermec will be one of the vendors showcasing current and future uses of RFID, with interactive demonstrations to promote general awareness and understanding of the technology.

The Discovery Lab training facility is based at Newham College in Stratford, London and will offer RFID+ courses and certifications accredited by CompTIA. RFID is already transforming the way business is done in virtually every industry, and for this reason it is crucial for the UK economy that businesses receive awareness and technical training in the technology. Unfortunately, the UK has until now been lagging behind other developed countries in RFID uptake and this represents a threat to competitiveness. The Discovery Lab will provide an interactive environment with which to inform organisations about the possibilities of RFID technology and deliver training in its implementation.

Martin Tolhurst, principal and chief executive of the college, summed up his aspirations for the lab, saying: “Whilst any major new training facility in this hugely important technology would be significant, the unique nature of the Discovery Lab makes its launch especially exciting. We expect the Discovery Lab to be the UK's premier training resource for RFID technology in the UK.”
