New Image Bus Tour, California 2007

Los Angeles—Martha Tucker, voted Cush City’s Best New Author of 2007 for her mystery novel, “The Mayor’s Wife Wore Sapphires,” will sponsor the inaugural Black New Image Book Tour™ covering the state of California.

A bus load of like-minded authors, screenwriters, essayist, both fiction and nonfiction, poets and playwrites will take a bus tour of California to share the new and improved Black image, sharing a more 3–dimensional African American image, one the world seldom sees.

Tucker is the wife of the late Mayor of Compton, Walter R. Tucker. She says that African Americans are more than drug dealers, rappers, video vixens, comedians, female abusing, violent, abusive, abandoning Black men, sex hungry, angry Black women, ignorant high school dropouts, and world-class athletes. “Yes we are some of that, but a whole lot more. And since the media and our literature paint such images, the race does not protest them.”
Last year, while Tucker and three writers sat at lunch talking about the damage those negative images do to future generations, she decided to bring the positive Black image out of the closet and place them in the sunlight for all world to see. There, the idea of sharing the Black New Image was born. The bus tour would take them to the people. The community response was so overwhelming that the planning moved forward quickly, almost abruptly.
The tour will introduce fabulous, larger-than-life African American character to the public—teachers, community leaders, inventors, researchers, doctors, lawyers, judges, playwrights, film producers, screenwriters, actresses that make a difference, economists, novelists, land developers, architects, artists, musicians, politicians, politician’s wives, statesmen, businessmen, entrepreneurs, bankers, stock brokers, restaurateurs, chefs, creative ditch diggers, publishers, statesmen, and philosophers. The tour will take them to the people. “And if the adage of ‘what we see is what
we 'be-com', then we’re heading toward a new black image,” Tucker says while the authors prepare to paint their seldom seen characters in full color for the entire world to see. They will look very much like the people who were the backbone in building America.
