The company's name hearkens back to the Lewis Allen poem, later adapted and popularized by songstress Billie Holiday, in protest against the lynching of "Negroes", as certain groups of people attempted to prevent Black Americans from participating in American society.

However, Strangefruit contemporizes this experience and makes it relevant to today by introducing young people to historical figures, including historical movements, who were the strange fruit of their generation — people whose unwillingness to conform to the status quo led them to become forerunners in their communities - People like Martin Luther King, Malcolm X,Angela Davis, Marcus Garvey, etc..

In this new millennium we ask the question, "Are you Strangefruit? And if so, how are you using your unique gifts, talents and flair to make the world a better place?" And especially in this era of increasing diversity awareness, we are all strangefruit.
