State Street Impacts Lives of Preschool Children at Boys & Girls Clubs of Laguna Beach

(PRLEAP.COM) Laguna Beach, CA – As one of the world’s leading providers of financial services to institutional investors, State Street knows a good ROI when it sees it. The State Street Foundation, Inc., the grant making arm of State Street Corporation, recently granted $5,000 in support of local children in need. This fall, the precious young preschool students at the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach will benefit from the Foundation’s generous contribution. This donation will help prepare 3 and 4 year olds from low-income households to start their education ready to learn. The Club Preschool is the only opportunity of its kind available to these children, giving them an “even start” with the rest of their classmates once they enter Kindergarten. Since 1997, the State Street Foundation has supported nonprofit organizations through donations to human services, education and community improvement projects.

Terry Anne Barman, B&CG Preschool Director remarked, “Companies like State Street, that demonstrate a high level of corporate social responsibility, are so important to our community. When it comes right down to it, it is people taking care of people, and we are sincerely grateful that our Club Preschool program was chosen by the State Street Foundation to receive this contribution. We thank State Street for making a positive impact on our community by making sure our local families in need are being served!”
After choosing to fund the Boys & Girls Club program, local representatives of the State Street Foundation visited some of the recent Preschool “graduates” who are currently enrolled in the Club’s Kinder Buddy program. After meeting with the kids, Sherri Merino, Vice President, and Alice Ong, Technical Project Consultant and State Street Ambassador to the Boys & Girls Club, both beamed as they presented the $5,000 check for the program. They were impressed by the quality of comprehensive services the Boys & Girls Club provides to local children and families and how this complements the State Street Foundation’s grant making philosophy.

Sheri Merino commented “At State Street, just as with the Boys & Girls Club, we are committed to addressing local needs that affect the well-being of our community; especially by providing less-advantaged citizens with the resources they need to be well, thrive and succeed. We recognize that if these children are ready to learn when they start school, there is a systemic impact that can improve their life as they grow up. We are proud to be able to make this social investment and help create a better future for the children and for our community.”

According to a Rand Corporation report released in March 2006, every $1 spent on preschool would generate $2.62 in economic benefits, in the form of reduced juvenile crime, less need for special education and fewer students repeating a grade.

The Boys & Girls Club Preschool is the only free high-quality school readiness program available to qualifying families in the area. This program is only possible because of local support.
