Wilson Smith Gathers Darkly Humorous Memoirs in His Book, "Just Dirt."

(PRLEAP.COM) MEMPHIS, TN — AUGUST 31, 2007 — In "Just Dirt," Wilson Smith has gathered together a series of memoirs that chronicles several mind-boggling adventures on his way to adulthood and semi-sanity: learning to deal with a schizophrenic mother as he was growing up; running away from boarding school in 1972 and hitch-hiking cross-country with his best friend at age 16; finding romance online in 1990; confronting workaholism and alcoholism; and emerging from all of it missing a few brain cells but mostly unscathed, and with his sense of humor and sense of the absurd intact.

"Just Dirt" (a reference to the Velvet Underground’s "Sweet Jane") takes the reader from Memphis to New York, from New York to Amsterdam, back to New York, over to Ray’s Pizza (the one on 11th Street and 6th Avenue), then a quick stop at the St. Marks Bar & Grill, and finally back to Memphis as he searches for those most unobtainable of things: "the meaning of life" and "true love."

From Just Dirt:
"If there’s nothing you can do right, then you can do anything wrong. At least that’s the way we saw it.

"We decided to sell everything we could and then hitchhike cross-country. The for-sale sign that we posted publicly in the mailroom read:

ATTENTION!
We are going to run away and ‘split for the coast’ and we need ‘bread.’
Everything must go. Come to our rooms and see what we have.

"And we weren’t kidding, although everybody assumed we were."

Wilson Smith went to Lulu because he wanted to be in control of the publishing process and found Lulu’s print-on-demand tools to be fast, easy and, most importantly, free. Just Dirt is available for purchase at http://stores.lulu.com/justdirt.

"Independent publishing and print-on-demand is the wave of the future, and the future is now," said Smith, "or a few minutes from now, actually. The Lulu process allows me to cut out the middle man (i.e., a separate publisher) and get my work out there the way I want it."
