DENVER,CO - August 30, 2007 - Detour, The Adventure Travel Marketplace (www.detourdestinations.com), announced today that it offset its carbon emissions with Carbonfund.org, the country's leading carbon reduction and offset organization. Although Detour minimizes it carbon emissions through its business model as a virtual company, with only a small wind-powered office and other employees working from home, Detour has now offset the remaining carbon footprint of its office and operations, and is able to make some of the adventure trips the company offers carbon neutral. This practical step highlights Detour’s commitment to be a leader in the Sustainable Travel and International Adventure Travel communities.

Detour's stakeholders are very concerned about global warming. Considering the implications of climate change, carbon offsets through Carbonfund.org are a natural extension of the work Detour, The Adventure Travel Marketplace, does on behalf of its stakeholders.

"As a company based on promoting small-scale tourism directly through socially and environmentally responsible local tour operators and outfitters, Detour is committed to protecting our environment and minimizing global climate change," said Greg Findley, Detour's CEO. "Travel has many benefits, including global understanding and the economic importance of tourism to many of the world's developing countries. But, one of the biggest negatives of tourism has to do with the carbon emissions from airplane travel. Detour, as a leader in the sustainable tourism arena, encourages everyone to minimize their overall carbon emissions, and to offset the rest through carbon credits."

"We are thrilled to have Detour as a CarbonFree partner," said Steve Offutt, Chief Operating Officer at Carbonfund.org. "They are ideally positioned to help raise awareness of global warming with their customers while also taking active steps to help reduce it. We think it's good for people to travel, so they can see the effects of global warming firsthand. But it's also important to minimize the effect that travel has on worsening that very problem. Detour is setting a great example to other agencies by seeing working both sides of that coin."

Carbonfund.org is a non-profit organization whose goal is to make carbon offsets and climate protection easy, affordable and a normal way of life for every individual and business. Carbon offsets enable individuals and businesses to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in one location, where it is cost effective, to offset the emissions they are responsible for in their normal activities, like home, office, driving or air travel. For instance, a clean, zero CO2 wind farm can offset the carbon dioxide produced by a coal-fired power plant. By supporting renewable energy, energy efficiency, and reforestation projects Carbonfund.org will retire an equivalent amount of carbon offsets. The financial support from these offsets will then help to continue the development of clean, renewable domestic sources of energy.

Detour is a trendsetting online adventure travel marketplace, where travelers can choose exactly the trip they want from a select list of the world's best local outfitters, helping travelers save money and make sure their vacation dollars go directly into the local economy where they travel. Detour actively promotes sustainable tourism, and works to promote green certified hotels and local tour operators whenever possible.
