EPICUREANS GO GREEN THIS YEAR AT 6TH ANNUAL TASTE OF SANTA MONICA

September 12, 2007 (PRLEAP.COM) Lifestyle News
This year’s 6th Annual Taste of Santa Monica is themed around green issues, featuring Heal the Bay as its local nonprofit organization. Although the Taste of Santa Monica serves as a fundraiser for the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce, it also seeks to give back to the community and Mother Earth. Each year, a local nonprofit organization is selected and given the chance to promote their cause to the over 2,000 attendees.

Green Practices Set in Motion

All of the event materials and programs for this year’s TOSM are printed on 30% post-consumer recycled paper and exhibitors are encouraged to use green products, follow composting procedures for food materials, recycle in on-site bins and reduce their overall trash.

There will also be postings of various information regarding green practices throughout the event so attendees can do their own part at home too. It is our hope that the community will enjoy this eco-friendly celebration of Santa Monica’s good taste and join in the festivities of a socially significant event.

This year, Heal the Bay will be featured in the only booth at the event not offering a fancy mini feast. Established by a group concerned about preserving the waters around Santa Monica, Heal the Bay has swelled into an organization and movement that has done more to recover the Bay's coastal environment than anyone could have expected.

Additionally, the chamber has taken steps to implement greener practices at the event. A partner from Sustainable Works, a non-profit environmental education organization, will be an integral member of the event planning committee to make sure food composting and other environmentally friendly practices are executed.

“For twelve years, the chamber has partnered with the City of Santa Monica and Sustainable Works to recognize and commend business’ achievements in economic development, social responsibility, and stewardship of the environment,” said Sheila Estaniel, Director of Marketing & Events for Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce. “We want to make sure we take steps to ensure that all chamber events and activities adhere to the green business principle we promote heavily.”
