Everett Community College Adds VA Course Based on Entrepreneurial Free
(
PRLEAP.COM) Everett, WA: Everett Community College in Everett, WA has added a Virtual Assistance course to their Business and Entrepreneurship Department and will be using the text, Entrepreneurial Freedom: How to Start and Grow a Profitable Virtual Assistance Practice penned by co-authors Jeannine Clontz of Arnold, MO, and Lauren Hidden of New Cumberland, PA. The Virtual Assistance (VA) course starts this fall and is a welcome addition to Everett Community College’s School of Business Design and Business and Entrepreneurship programs.
While the Virtual Assistance industry is still rather new, last year, Redbook (September 2006) featured the Virtual Assistance business as one of the top three options for women to start a home-based business. More recently, Virtual Assistance gained notoriety both from ABC News (
http://abcnews.go.com/Business/SpecialSeries/story?id=3431434) and as a feature story on The Today Show (

A Virtual Assistant is an independent contractor with expertise in specific core business functions. Outsourcing to a virtual assistant allows companies to secure a higher level of talent without the expense and exposure of the more traditional in-house employee. A Virtual Assistant (VA) can specialize in areas of administration support, bookkeeping, writing and editing, IT support, graphic design, website design, and much more.
Kathryn Willestoft is the VA Program Coordinator at Everett Community College. She states, “Our two-quarter program is unique. The first quarter students learn about the VA industry, create their business plan, and develop marketing materials. During the second quarter, we actually help students launch their business on the internet.”
Both Clontz and Hidden are thrilled that Everett Community College chose their book and workbook as a part of their curriculum. They are currently working with several other community colleges nationwide that are on the cutting edge of this new technology-based, small business model.
“More and more people look for opportunities to work from home, whether to care for children or aging parents,” remarked co-author Jeannine Clontz. “The Virtual Assistance industry is a realistic and viable option for men and women who have not only the professional skills needed by many companies, but the desire to be an entrepreneur and learn how to own and operate a small business.”
Co-author Lauren Hidden stated, “We have been overwhelmed by the positive response we are hearing from community colleges who find our book, and the companion workbook, to be a comprehensive and complete study of how to start and grow a business of this type. It truly takes ‘forward thinking’ on the part of these institutions to see the value of this business model, and offer it as a part of their curriculum.”
