Five Million Women Follow Football and Almost One Million Play, Reveals The Sport Report from Ciao Surveys and Paul Winstone Research
(PRLEAP.COM) LONDON – 23 September 2007 – With the Women’s World Cup in full swing, leading online survey provider Ciao Surveys, in conjunction with Paul Winstone Research (PWR), has revealed the results of a recent survey that demonstrate an estimated 4.9 million women and girls in Britain have followed* football during the last year. Meanwhile, just under 1.0 million women and girls have played** the beautiful game at least once over a twelve month period. This compares with over 13 million men and boys who follow football and 6.4 million men and boys who have played in the last year.
Participation in the sport generally decreases with age amongst women, with fewer than 1% of women over the age of 24 playing. Interestingly though, it seems there is hardcore group of players who continue for many years. Amongst those women who played, across all age groups from 4 to 65, 13% of players participated 50 or more times per year. This was consistent across almost all age groups with the only exception being amongst 12-17 year olds, whereby 29% of girls who do play the sport do so more than 50 times a year. An estimated 30,000 very committed female players actually play the game over 200 times a year, all of whom are under 25 years of age.
Unsurprisingly, men play much more football than women in the UK overall. Women in the UK played football on an estimated 29 million occasions over a 12 month period. Meanwhile, men played on over 283 million occasions.
“With almost a million players a year and an estimated 30,000 players, junior and senior, now claiming to play over 200 times a year, women’s football is clearly flourishing in the UK,” commented Paul Winstone of PWR. “England’s achievements so far in the Women’s World Cup is built on this foundation and their success can only grow the sport further. Now the question is can England progress against the USA on Saturday and get through to the last four.”
The Sport Report from Ciao Surveys and Paul Winstone Research surveyed over 5,000 UK households, gathering data on over 13,000 individual household members. This survey was conducted by Ciao Surveys and Paul Winstone Research (PWR) among a sample of over 5,000 households in the UK, closely quota controlled to be representative by gender, age, social grade and presence of children in household, within Government Office Region. This household sample in turn generated a representative sample of over 13,000 household members aged 4-64, with surveying conducted between the dates of 9th and 31st July 2007. The margin of error for a sample this size is estimated at +/-1.5% for an observation of 50% or +/-0.6% for an observation of 5%. Football was followed by 38% and played by 16% of all household members contacted.
