Los Angeles Orthodontist Plans Educational Activities for Orthodontic Health Month

September 30, 2007 (PRLEAP.COM) Health News
September 30, 2007 – Los Angeles and Santa Monica, California – October is National Orthodontic Health Month, and Los Angeles Orthodontist Dr. Atoosa Nikaeen has several educational activities planned in honor of it. Each year in October, Nikaeen and members of her staff visit Los Angeles schools to talk to students about braces, diet and oral hygiene, Nikaeen said. For parents, she uses National Orthodontic Health Month to educate them on early childhood disorders, when to start orthodontic treatment and what treatment will do for their children.

This October will be no different.

Students and parents will be given informational brochures about early childhood orthodontic problems that need immediate attention.

Some of those problems Nikaeen’s staff will touch on with parents include poor mouth habits, such as thumb-sucking, tongue thrusting and mouth breathing, Nikaeen said. They also will provide information on growth discrepancies, such as excessive overjet and overbites, cross bites, severe grinding, impacted teeth and early loss of one or several primary teeth, to name a few topics.

Basic information about braces that members of Nikaeen’s staff will share with students includes:

• Spending extra time brushing teeth to ensure all areas around the braces are cleaned properly.
• Providing information on specialized brush tips to help get between braces and wires adequately.
• Using floss-threaders to facilitate flossing of the teeth.
• Avoiding hard, sticky, crunchy and chewy foods to keep braces intact and help to make treatment flow smoothly.
