Perimenopause (or premenopause) is the stage in a woman's life when she is transitioning from childbearing years into menopause. Symptoms vary greatly in their severity and occurrence. During this time (near a woman's midlife) her levels of estrogen and progesterone begin to fall. Estrogen will fall 40% to 60% and progesterone levels will fall to essentially zero by the onset of menopause.

Menopause is the time at which monthly menstrual periods cease and a woman is no longer able to have children. The perimenopause time of a woman's life is highly variable in its length and symptoms. Some women may experience a sudden cessation of their menstrual periods while other women may experience a tapering off of periods with increasing irregularity of periods for as many as 10 to 15 years. Some women may begin to experience the changes of menopause during premenopause and these symptoms could be very mild or moderate to severe.

Many of the symptoms of perimenopause are thought to be due to a phenomenon known as "Estrogen Dominance". In this condition, a woman has too much estrogen relative to the amount of progesterone in her body. As a result, the body is off-balance in terms of female hormones circulating throughout the body. Symptoms of perimenopause may be variable but it helps if you know what you may expect.

Hot flashes - are a very common symptom of menopause and perimenopause. Hot flashes are caused by the body sensing that you are too cool and quickly trying to heat your body. They can occur many times a day and for many women they get worse at night. If you have hot flashes, you may complain of being hot and no one else in the room is hot. You may want to keep room temperatures lower than what others may find comfortable.

Mood swings or depression - You may notice that you are more irritable, get upset more often or feel down more often around the time that menopause approaches. Researchers are not sure if this is because of the issues that women may commonly face at this time or hormonal. Women with a prior history of depression may be at more risk.

Memory loss - You may feel it is more difficult to remember things during perimenopause. Concentration may also be affected. Many women need to use aids to help them to remember important things such as appointments. These symptoms could be caused by depression.

Tension or migraine headaches - You may have started getting more headaches or perhaps you never had headaches before and now you do. Hormone induced migraines can flare up at the time of perimenopause. Tension headaches may become more common because of the everyday stress women may face or because a woman is dealing with the realities of beginning to come near to entering into menopause.

Vaginal dryness - Hormonal imbalances can cause a decrease in the natural fluids that lubricate your vagina. This dryness can cause particular problems during sexual intercourse because sexual intercourse can become painful and less pleasurable for both partners.

Libido decrease - Perimenopause can lead to a decrease in libido. You may not feel sexually excited as often or your level of sexual excitement may be lowered. This may be due in part to the vaginal dryness, problems with self-image due to some of the body changes of menopause or depression.

Insomnia - You may notice that is more difficult to fall asleep or you may wake up earlier than you need to and be unable to fall back asleep. Sleep problems could be due to hormones, depression or hat flashes that occur at night.

Frequent urination and/or urinary incontinence - You may find that you need to urinate more frequently or more urgently than before. You may even become incontinent of urine when you cough or sneeze. This could be due to the decrease of estrogen causing a thinning of the tissues of your urethra or weakness in your pelvic muscles.
