New Xlibris Release Centers on Homosexuality in Advertising

Homosexuality has often been a much talked-about issue, but rarely has it been dealt with in the aspect of advertising. However, the Xlibris book A Hint of Homosexuality? crashes through the protective fences of conservatism and delves into this hot topic with much gusto.

Readers only have to open their minds in leafing through the pages of A Hint of Homosexuality, as it provides thorough analyses and interpretations of advertisements – both recent and vintage – and the subliminal homoerotic messages hidden in them.

According to A Hint of Homosexuality? author, Dr. Bruce Joffe, gay intimacy and interaction, references to the male genitalia, and threats of sexual conquest of and between men can be documented in ads as far back as the late 1800s. In fact, he cited the example of an ad for a toy gun from 1917 with the headline, “I am Big Dick.”

More recent examples cited by Joffe in his book include two controversial Dolce & Cabbana print ads that – according to the author – were shown in GQ magazine. There were intense reader reactions to the said ads, claiming that these were “sleazy” and that these insulted sensibilities.

Most of the print ads that Joffe discussed in A Hint of Homosexuality? were shown in the book itself to let readers paint a vivid picture of the said discussions. Thus, reader discretion is advised if one is to purchase a book copy.

Authors
Much of the ideas and discussions in A Hint of Homosexuality? are given credence due to the undeniable expertise of author Dr. Bruce Joffe in the said subject. He is a professor of Communication who teaches several Gay and Lesbian Studies courses, as well as classes in marketing, advertising, and public relations, in Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia. He has also taught at George Mason University where he studied the relationship between sexual minorities, the media, and cultural norms. Several of his studies have appeared in several academic journals and scholarly research.

Dr. Joffe will soon be coming out with his own life story entitled, Square Peg in a Round Hole, also through Xlibris.
