Meta-analysis confirms high-dose Omega-3 fish oil provides effective relief from inflammatory joint pain, reports PharmaOmega.com

CHICAGO, September 30, 2007 - A scientific review evaluating 17 studies that used fish oil supplementation concluded that fish oil is an effective agent for pain relief. Omega-3 from fish oil was effective, especially when enough was used over a long enough period of time (2.7 grams of EPA and DHA for a minimum of 3 months), reports PharmaOmega.com.

Fish oil is considered effective for inflammatory conditions. This review of human clinical trials published in the journal Pain (Goldberg, Katz.129;2007) revealed that fish oil effectively reduced tender joints, morning stiffness, intensity of joint pain and NSAID consumption in people with joint pain or rheumatoid arthritis. The methods used in the analysis enabled the doctors to identify the dose and duration of supplementation that worked most effectively.

“Over the years of working with fish oil research, I’ve watched the evidence emerge, indicating how it can really help people experience pain relief,” stated Gretchen Vannice, MS, RD, Manager of Scientific Affairs at NourishLife. “It’s refreshing to see this comprehensive analysis. It’s great that consumers have concentrated omega 3 fish oil capsules available, a proven and natural option without the side effects associated with NSAIDs.”

Professor Philip Calder from the University of Southampton in the UK, an expert on fatty acids and inflammation commented: “This latest meta-analysis confirms that omega-3 fatty acids from fish and fish oils do have tangible benefit on joint pain and so are a useful addition to available therapies for rheumatoid arthritis. These fatty acids [EPA & DHA] probably work by changing the mix of chemicals produced within the joint to a less inflammatory mix. Because of the robust evidence in their favor, rheumatologists should consider recommending omega-3 fatty acids to their patients”.

The relatively high doses of Omega-3 noted in the analysis would require about 10 standard fish oil capsules daily or only 4 of PharmaOmega’s pharmaceutical grade concentrated capsules found at www.PharmaOmega.com. Sign up to receive their free Omega-3 newsletter at PharmaOmega - Wellness Matters
