Autism Speaks Targets San Diego Latino Community
(
PRLEAP.COM) Autism Speaks is reaching out to the Latino Community in San Diego County. Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime.
Today, 1 in 150 individuals is diagnosed with autism, making it more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined. It occurs in all racial, ethnic, and social groups and is four times more likely to strike boys than girls. Autism impairs a person’s ability to communicate and relate to others. It is also associated with rigid routines and repetitive behaviors, such as obsessively arranging objects or following very specific routines. Symptoms can range from very mild to quite severe.
Although autism can reliably be diagnosed by 18 months, diagnosis in the Latino community does not occur this early. Studies have found that as much as 50% of autistic children in the Latino community are not diagnosed.
Of those children in San Diego’s large Latino community that are diagnosed, many are not diagnosed until age 6 or more. Early and intensive intervention and therapy including applied behavior analysis, occupational therapy and speech therapy are the most proven means to improve long-term prospects of autistic individuals. Autism Speaks has been approaching local groups in the community and seeking their support in getting information on autism out to the community.
Autism Speaks is the world’s largest autism advocacy group and has raised tens of millions of dollars towards autism research. Autism Speaks will be holding its fourth annual Walk Now For Autism on November 3rd at Balboa Park starting at 8 am. Autism Speaks is working towards increasing participation by the Latino community and assisting them through the resource fair at the walk. Participants can pre-register at
