Solar powered homes offered by Florida Home builder ICI Homes as part of their EFACTOR homes

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. —- ICI Homes, which ranks as one of Florida’s largest developers of luxury communities, is offering optional solar power in their homes. Steve Reeger, ICI Homes’ special projects coordinator, said the GE Solar panels are designed to blend into roofing tiles.

“There is no big grid on the roof, these solar electric panels are in the same shape as the roof tiles and integrated in for aesthetics,” Reeger said.

Reeger explained that the silicon wafer photovoltaic panels create free electricity from the sun by converting the sun’s energy into DC current and then “inverting” it into alternating current to power air conditioners, appliances and lighting in your new home.

During peak production times, when the sun is the highest, the system generates more power than the home can use. Excess power is sent back to the electric company grid.

“A special electric meter records the ‘extra electricity’ that is sent back to the power grid and it appears as a credit on your monthly bill,” Reeger explained.

The optional solar electric panels cost about $40,000, Reeger said, but qualifies for a $20,000 rebate from the State of Florida and a $2,000 federal tax credit, which more than cuts the cost in half.

In conjunction with ICI’s EFACTOR technology a 3,500 square foot home currently under construction will have an electric bill of as little as $60 a month versus a bill for a typical home of this size of $400-$500, allowing for this feature to pay for itself in 5-6 years or less,” Reeger said.
