JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes - Ellie’s Quest for a Cure Team Raises over $5,000

(PRLEAP.COM) Ellie White (Ellie’s Closet’s namesake) celebrated her 6th birthday party by participating in the Denver JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes. There was an army of over 90 walkers on “Ellie’s Quest for a Cure” team and the team’s pirate themed t-shirt won the honor of “best design”. Even as a first year team they managed to surpass their goal by raising more than $5,000 and the donations are still coming in! Ellie’s team was also sponsored by several local businesses and organizations, including Sportline Team Sports, Revelle Real Estate & Appraisal, Rocky Mountain School of Dance and Mimi’s Café.

The Walk to Cure Diabetes is a 2.5 mile annual event to raise research money to find a cure for Type I diabetes also known as juvenile diabetes. Long term, children with diabetes have an ever increasing risk of other body parts failing them. According to the National Institutes of Health, retinopathy and neuropathy “most commonly occur” after 10 years from the onset of diabetes. The longer a child has diabetes, the more susceptible they are to heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney damage, limb-amputation, brain damage and early death.

The Denver JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, which is only one of over 200 walk sites, had a goal of $1 million dollars and they are very close to reaching that goal. Last year JDRF funded more than $122 million for diabetes research which has enabled a better life for Ellie and children like her with tools such as insulin pumps and constant glucose monitoring.
