READING, Pa. (Oct. 10, 2007) — Local SUBWAY® Restaurants, known for their healthy menu options, are supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s annual Light The Night fundraising walk on Saturday, Oct. 20 by donating 1,000 sandwiches – a contribution valued at more than $3,500.

In 2006, more than 5,000 Pennsylvanians were diagnosed with, and 2,690 succumbed to, a blood cancer. The Light The Night Walk will bring together 1,500 area residents to participate in a non-competitive walk aimed at sparking awareness of blood cancers and generating critical funds for blood cancer research and patient services.

Walkers can register in advance online at www.LightTheNight.org/epa or starting at 4:30 p.m. the day of the event, when participants will converge at Gring’s Mill Recreation Area in Reading, Pa. to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by cancer.

At 6:30 p.m. teams of co-workers, families and friends will complete the one-mile walk together in twilight holding illuminated balloons – white for survivors and red for supporters. The walk is a community celebration, complete with music, refreshments and family activities.

“SUBWAY® is proud to support an event that has such a positive impact on the Berks County community,” said Mary Shelton, a member of the local SUBWAY® restaurants’ advertising board. “We believe in this cause and are excited to help raise money that will fund research to cure blood cancers.”

Shelton and her husband, Kevin, own two SUBWAY® locations and will help prepare the sandwiches for the event. She added, “Leukemia has affected a family member, so this event is that much more important to us. My entire family will volunteer at the event to show support for others going through similar experiences.”

According to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, more than 785,000 Americans are living with blood cancers. Every five minutes someone in the United States is diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma, and every 10 minutes someone dies from one of these cancers.

Last year, more than $75,000 was raised through the Light The Night Walk in Berks County, contributing to the more than $1.25 million raised in Eastern Pennsylvania and more than $33 million raised through walks in more than 260 communities nationwide.
