As it becomes increasingly obvious that we are going to have to change our lifestyles if we are to prevent an environmental disaster, publisher MQ Publications (MQP) has come up with a book that it hopes will deal a double blow in the battle to save the planet.

The Armchair Environmentalist: A three-minute-a-day action plan to save the planet by leading environmental author Karen Christensen, is a guide to green living with a vital difference because it is printed on 100% recycled paper.

Says MQ Publications CEO, Zaro Weil: “ We were blissfully unaware that the paper we had always assumed was ancient forest friendly just wasn’t. So we teamed up with Greenpeace in order to ensure that we cleaned up our act. In doing so we issue a challenge to other UK publishers to follow suit"

Working with Greenpeace, MQP has adopted a procurement policy that commits it to move all its books onto ancient forest friendly paper over the next three years. The Greenpeace Book Campaign encourages publishers to start developing 'ancient forest friendly' solutions such as the use of recycled paper and/or virgin fibre certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

The Campaign follows a similar initiative launched in Canada four years ago where 67 publishers, including Random House Canada and Raincoast Books, made formal commitments to phase out ancient forest fibre. To date, four and a half million Canadian books have been printed on ‘ancient forest friendly’ paper, By doing so significant ecological savings have been achieved. For example just one edition of a popular children’s novel alone saved 39,320 trees, 63, 435, 801litres of water (enough to fill 42 Olympic swimming pools) and greenhouses gases equivalent to driving a car 5.3 million kilometres.

With Greenpeace's help, for The Armchair Environmentalist MQP chose a 100% recycled paper called Cyclus Offset, produced by the Danish manufacturer, Dalum.

Belinda Fletcher, Greenpeace Campaigner says: "We are delighted that The Armchair Environmentalist is printed on 100% recycled paper. It's easy to become an active armchair environmentalist when publishers like MQP are making it so simple! We hope other publisher's will follow suit and join the Greenpeace Book Campaign.”
