Patients Seek Smile Line Improvements from Los Angeles Porcelain Veneers Specialist

October 20, 2007—LOS ANGELES AND BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA— Cosmetic dentistry requires an artist’s eye and a surgeon’s precision to create that straight, white, natural-looking smile patients desire. Increasingly, new patients are turning to cosmetic dentist Dr. Anthony Mobasser, a Los Angeles porcelain veneers expert, to improve their smiles.

Doing so means taking a close look at the patient’s smile line, Mobasser said.
The teeth that are predominantly displayed when a person smiles is known as the smile line. This line connects the biting edges of the top teeth. A perfect smile line follows the curve of the lower lip and runs parallel to the horizontal line made by drawing an imaginary line to connect the pupils of the eyes.
“A curved smile line in which the upper teeth follow the lower lip line gives a youthful appearance,” Mobasser said, “whereas a straighter smile can leave a person looking older.”
Applying porcelain veneers within the smile line typically involves eight to 12 upper teeth and eight to 10 lower teeth. Patients can opt to place veneers on fewer teeth, but there are some keys to keep in mind when seeking to achieve a perfect smile with veneers while using fewer teeth in the smile line.

Mobasser rarely recommends placing porcelain veneers only on the six front teeth, because doing so includes the canines, which typically are prominent in a person’s smile.

“When you stop at the canines with porcelain veneers, it makes these prominent teeth even more prominent and creates a black space behind the canines, making it totally unnatural,” Mobasser said.

Many people are under the impression that the way they see their smile in the mirror is the way others see their smile. Not so. Smiles are viewed from all angles, and when the smile of a person whose veneers stop at their canines is viewed from either side, the difference between the veneers and the natural teeth can be drastic.

A patient’s lip line also should be taken into consideration when determining how many teeth should receive porcelain veneers, Mobasser said. A high lip line, which shows more teeth and more gum, might require more veneers than a patient with a low lip line.

“You want to have a harmonious smile,” Mobasser said.

When improving a patient’s smile line, as few as two or four teeth can be fitted for porcelain veneers, if no color variation is required on the teeth not having veneers. This option is great for patients with naturally white teeth who seek to repair cracked, chipped or broken teeth to restore their front teeth.

Preliminary work and records are important to determining how many teeth in the smile line to improve, Mobasser said. Prior to treatment, Mobasser orders x-rays, preoperative impressions, intraoral photos, extraoral photos showing front and side views while the patient is smiling and a proper bite analysis. This information is used when deciding upon appropriate recommendations and treatment options that will please the patient.

“These records help to develop a diagnosis and determine the etiological factors behind that diagnosis,” Mobasser said. “This helps chart a course of treatment that best fits the patient’s needs and wants.”

Often, there are many options for methods of treatment. Having all of this preliminary work helps Mobasser consult with the patient to determine the best option for that patient.

“At a minimum, a great cosmetic dentist needs all this preliminary information to come up with a diagnosis,” he said. “Cosmetic needs and patient health both are taken into consideration to come up with an option to help the patient for a lifetime.”
