Only 40% of British Children Meeting Government Fitness Targets
LONDON - 20 October 2007 - The Sport Report by leading online survey provider Ciao Surveys and Paul Winstone Research (PWR) has revealed that only 42% of 4-11 year olds, and 38% of 12-17 year olds in Britain are meeting the government recommended target of a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise on 3 separate occasions each week. The numbers are far worse for people 18 and over, with only 22% meeting the target.
The study, which questioned household head’s about the fitness habits of everyone in the home, including children’s activities both in and out of school, raises doubts about the government’s recent assertion that 86% of children are getting 2 hours of physical education in school each week, as reported by schools.
The Sport Report also revealed a large gap in physical activity between boys and girls. While the differences between boys and girls 4-11 was negligible at 43% and 42% respectively, only 31% of girls 12-17 are meeting the target, compared to 44% of boys in this age group. Additionally, boys are far more likely to participate in team sports than girls, as seen by the following table of the most popular activities for those aged 12-17 in each gender:
Girls
Cycling - 14%
Swimming - 10%
Aerobics - 14%
Trampoline - 8%
Dance (incl. social dancing) - 8%
Running/Jogging - 8%
Track or field athletics - 5%
Netball - 3%
Football - 3%
Rollerblading or skateboarding - 3%
Gymnastics - 2%
Rounders - 2%
Horse riding - 2%
Boys
Cycling - 24%
Football - 14%
Running/Jogging - 7%
Swimming - 7%
Weight training - 6%
Aerobics - 6%
Trampoline - 4%
Track or field athletics - 4%
Skateboarding or rollerblading - 3%
Rugby (Union or League) - 3%
Cricket - 2%
Tennis - 2%
Basketball - 2%
Note: Percentages listed show the proportion of all sports and fitness occasions of half an hour or more duration that is accounted for by each activity.
Interestingly, some less traditional fitness activities such as trampolining seem to have gained in popularity, and account for a significant proportion of all sports and fitness occasions for this age group, especially amongst girls.
Nationally, only 26% of all people are participating in at least 30 minutes of physical activity at least three times a week. Social status also affects participation, with 30% of upper grade individuals meeting the target, in contrast to 21% of the lowest grade.
About The Sport Report
The Sport Report is a syndicated research report published by Ciao Surveys and Paul Winstone Research (PWR). In the lead up to 2012 it comprises a major survey of the sports participation and following across the UK. The survey collects data on over 13,000 individuals, but the unique feature of this survey is that it covers the participation and following of sports/fitness activities amongst both adults and children aged 4 and over across the UK. The sample has been very carefully stratified by Government Office Region, with representative quota set in terms of gender, age, social grade and presence of children in household, within each region. Crucially, the survey also provides a panel resource to allow rapid and cost-effective access for follow-up research amongst participants or followers of any of the individual sport or fitness activities covered.

Surveying was conducted between the dates of 9th and 31st July 2007. The margin of error for the overall sample reported in this press release is estimated at +/-1.5% for an observation of 50% or +/-0.6% for an observation of 5%.
