San Francisco Soroptimists Call for Submissions for Awards and Scholarship

(PRLEAP.COM) Today, Soroptimist International San Francisco, a service organization for professional women, announced their 2007-2008 awards program. Applications are now available and San Francisco women are invited to apply. Award recipients will be recognized at the Soroptimist International San Francisco 86th Anniversary Awards Dinner on March 29, 2008.

The Soroptimist of San Francisco awards program comprises two awards and one scholarship recognizing those who work to improve the status of women.

The Women’s Opportunity Award seeks to recognize and support women who are pursuing additional skills, training, and education. This $2000 cash award helps women who are the primary wage earners for their families to enter or return to the workforce or to improve their employment status.

Eligibility criteria:
The award is open to women demonstrating financial need who provide the
primary financial support for their family and who are currently enrolled in or
have been accepted to a vocational/skills training program or undergraduate
degree program. The recipient will also be eligible for awards from Soroptimist International of the Americas at the regional and federation levels.

The Violet Richardson Award recognizes young women ages 14 to 17 who have demonstrated their commitment to improve the community and the world through volunteer service. Both the winner and her volunteer organization will each receive a $250 cash award. The recipient is also eligible for awards from Soroptimist International of the Americas at the regional and federation levels. The Georgia McHugh Scholarship recognizes a young woman who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship, leadership and community service. This



$5000 scholarship provides financial assistance for educational expenses to a high school senior planning to attend an accredited four-year California college or
university. Candidates for the scholarship must be residents of the City and County of San Francisco enrolled in a San Francisco accredited high school. Applications are available at http://www.soroptimistspr.org/district2/sanfrancisco_mchugh.htm or can be requested by phone at (415) 550-7943.

Soroptimist International of San Francisco supports local projects such as the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, Brennan House, Salvation Army, Larkin Street Youth Center, North of Market Senior Center, and The Recreation Center for the Handicapped, Girls on the Run, La Casa de las Madres, SafeHouse and S.A.G.E. (Standing Against Global Exploitation).
