About The Children’s Grief Education Association

The Children’s Grief Education Association (www.childgrief.org) is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization. Located in Denver, Colorado, The Children’s Grief Education Association provides grief education and support to bereaved children, families, and professionals in schools and community organizations. They do so through local, national, and international outreach and training. Shane Phillips, Mary Lyles, and Don Lyles founded the association.

Shane Phillips, Chairman of the Board of Directors, knows the impact of loss all too well. At 16, his parents and only sibling, Mindy, were killed in a tragic plane accident. His personal struggle has imbued him with fortitude and dedication to bringing support and encouragement to grieving children. Shane and his wife, Valerie, have two children.

Mary Lyles, MSW, LCSW, and Executive Director, brings passion and resources from both personal losses and from 10 years’ experience in nonprofit management, training, and therapeutic care for bereaved children and families. Mary successfully developed two Denver bereavement programs: Footprints and Judi’s House for grieving children and families.

Don Lyles, M.Div., BCC, provides expertise in spiritual care. A clergyman for more than 40 years, he now serves as staff chaplain for St. Anthony Hospitals, where he provides pastoral counsel and support to those affected by illness, trauma, and death. He recognizes the need for additional community resources for bereaved children. Don serves as a member of the CGEA Advisory Board.
