eMag Solutions Adopts EDRM XML Standard

November 08, 2007 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
Atlanta, GA – November 8, 2007 – eMag Solutions, LLC, a leading international electronic discovery company, announced its adoption of the Electronic Discovery Reference Model’s (EDRM) recently developed Extensible Markup Language (XML) standard for the easy transfer of electronically stored information (ESI) to and from different applications engaged in various phases of the discovery process. eMag Solutions participated in the development of the new standards and strongly supports the newest initiative of the EDRM, a well-regarded industry group created to develop and establish practical guidelines and standards for e-discovery.

The new XML standard was developed in an effort to address a number of challenges shared by e-discovery practitioners including law firms, in-house counsel, corporate IT departments, vendors and consultants. Adoption of the standard for any of these groups will help achieve the following important goals:
• Reduce the costs of moving data from one step to the next, one program to the next, one organization to the next
• Reduce errors associated with movement of data
• Reduce electronic discovery software development costs and shorten development cycles
• Increase the transparency of the entire electronic discovery process

Overall, the new XML standard will help to reduce the cost, time and manual work associated with e-discovery.

“Having a standard protocol for the transfer of ESI during discovery is certain to make a significant impact on the industry’s ability to manage complex projects far more effectively,” said Brendan Sullivan, president and CEO of eMag Solutions. “With the forever-increasing sizes of data collections and the numerous parties engaged in these matters, I hope that all of our industry colleagues are as eager to adopt and support this important new standard,” he added.

“The XML standard addresses a major pain point within e-discovery – moving and formatting the different types of data across all of these disparate systems – and is an important step towards streamlining the process,” said George Socha, co-founder of EDRM and president of Socha Consulting LLC. “By adopting this standard, eMag is taking a leadership position in creating greater efficiencies within the e-discovery process.”

The new standard consists of an XML Schema Definition (XSD) that provides for the consistent description of documents, email, attachments and standalone files, as well as the underlying metadata for all of those objects as they move through the e-discovery process. The XML Project, (the EDRM working group responsible for developing the new standard), also created a validation tool to quickly and efficiently validate that files conform to the XML standard prior to importing the data. Additionally, the group developed an XML compliance process to help all parties determine whether products conform to the standard and interoperate properly.
