United States Governors Declare August 1 Pick Up America Day

Governor's understand the scope of the problems caused by litter and have done their part to help get people involved in picking up the litter in their communities. The following states have already officially declared the day in their states: Ariz., Ga., Iowa, Kan., Mich., Neb., N.J., Ore., Wash., Wisc. and W.Va.

Pick Up America (PuA) is a non-profit organization that was co-founded by Connie Warren and Shawn Downer. It is an environmental organization with the mission to clean up America one neighborhood at a time. PuA concentrates on removing litter by organizing neighborhood cleanups from coast to coast, such as "Pick up America Day" on August 1. This organization also helps to eliminate abandoned homes and buildings. All renovated homes will be donated to a needy family who, through no fault of their own, cannot afford to purchase a home. All renovated buildings will be donated to the city in which they are located for the use that would best benefit the residents. Like all non-profit organizations, PuA's survival depends solely on the generosity of the American public. Each and every donation is greatly appreciated and will be put to good use.

Keeping America beautiful is a full time job. One person, one couple, or one family cannot do it alone. It is the responsibility of everyone. Environmental problems caused by litter including contamination to air, water and land, leave all people to feel the effect regardless of racial, educational, or economical background.

Join PuA's efforts on August 1, 2005 as it kicks off the Pick Up America Project. The organization is asking all Americans to go out and pick up one bag of litter from within the community. If everyone does this, imagine the amount of litter that can be removed in just one day.
