Christenbury Eye Center Shows Support for American Diabetes Month

December 12, 2007 - November is American Diabetes Month. In support of raising awareness for this noteworthy cause, Christenbury Eye Center is working to promote the importance of preventive and surgical eye care for those suffering from diabetes.

Diabetes is a potentially life-threatening disease that involves the body's ability to process sugar. Over time, high levels of sugar can build up in a diabetic's blood and tissue. This can eventually cause significant damage to organs, including the eyes. In fact, Dr. Jonathan Christenbury states that "diabetes is the most common cause of blindness in adults."

Specifically, it is estimated that diabetics are 25 times more likely than the general population to suffer from blindness. Because of these alarming numbers, Christenbury Eye Center suggests diabetics receive a dilated eye exam at least once a year. "Preventive care is the most important factor in avoiding blindness in diabetics. If diabetic retinopathy is caught quickly enough, steps can be taken to reduce vision impairment," remarked Dr. Christenbury.

Diabetic retinopathy is the name of the condition that can ultimately result in blindness for individuals with diabetes. If discovered early, treatment options may be available. Since Christenbury Eye Center is a full-service ophthalmic center, diabetics can receive complete vision care from Dr. Christenbury and his staff. This care all starts with routine eye exams - and Christenbury Eye Center would like to encourage anyone with diabetes to schedule his or her checkup right now during American Diabetes Month.

Christenbury Eye Center's all-laser WaveFront Custom IntraLASIK procedure may also be a viable vision correction option for individuals with diabetes. During a free LASIK consultation, diabetics will receive an in-depth examination that will determine if this life-changing procedure is an option. Dr. Jonathan Christenbury has more than 20 years of expert patient care and has helped tens of thousands achieve stunning new vision.

Christenbury Eye Center is located at 3621 Randolph Road, Charlotte, North Carolina, 28211. For more information on WaveFront Custom IntraLASIK, please visit the official Christenbury Eye Center website at www.christenbury.com.
