Dearborn—December 19, 2007— The Marriage Resource Center (MRC) is expanding their efforts to raise awareness of programs and services for singles and couples to improve the quality of their relationships to strengthen marriages and reduce the divorce rate to the prison population at Milan Federal Prison.

Beginning in December, Julie Bock, executive director, certified marriage educator and staff are bringing the P.I.C.K. A Partner program better known as “How Not to Marry a Jerk or Jerkette” to inmates in the Residential Drug Abuse Program in Milan, Michigan.

Recognition of what you need to know before you say “I Do” will offer to the inmates what to avoid namely pitfalls to poor communication, mate selection criteria and for the married men how to win their wives heart back with better conflict management skills and speaker-listener techniques. “We know that if these men have a healthy relationship to go to when they leave prison they are less likely to return to prison, states Julie Bock.

The mission of MRC is to improve the quality of marriage relationships for adults, children and families by raising awareness of the possibility of, and benefits to, achieving a satisfying life-long marriage, to increase awareness of the programs and services available to assist couples to achieve such marriages.

The opportunity to present these training in Milan prison is to share the benefits healthy marriage and relationship will have on their families and the community they will reside. Researchers found the higher percentage of couples in healthy marriages, compared to unhealthy marriages includes lower crime statistics, higher property values and decreased need for social services.

The Marriage Resource Center is offering support to the efforts of Harold Sawyer and Bruce Fry, Drug Treatment Specialist who are giving to the inmates the potential to function as healthy contributors to society. This is their way of making the inmates accountable for their own growth.

The Marriage Resource Center considers this time as major to helping sustain healthy marriages in the both Wayne and Washtenaw County.
