Los Angeles – CA. In memory of Hermosa Beach resident, surfer, lifeguard, skier, snowboarder, ceramic artist and teacher, John G. Goodwin, the first annual John Goodwin Surf Contest will be held on Saturday, December 29th at 7:30A at 26th Street in Manhattan Beach. Contest divisions will include 18 and under and over 19 shortboards; 39 and under and 40 and over longboards, and women shortboard or longboard.

About John Goodwin: John Gordon Goodwin was born Aug. 24, 1942 and grew up in Manhattan Beach, California.

John surfed for the Hap Jacobs surf team from 1963 to 1965 and continued to surf all his life, taking trips to San Onofre with friends and family and to more far-flung surf meccas in Hawaii, Fiji and Australia. John worked as a Los Angeles County lifeguard for 40 years. During those 40 years, he spent 15 summers teaching in the Junior Lifeguard program and another four summers working in a program for handicapped children and adults.

The mission of the John Goodwin Surf Contest is to fund the Scholarship Program, which allows under-privileged children to participate in Junior Guards, or to create and distribute water safety education material, purchase equipment for the program, or lessen expenses accrued during the regional and national Junior Guard competitions.

Entries are $25 for one division and $10 for a second division. Contest divisions will include 18 and under and over 19 shortboards; 39 and under and 40 and over longboards, and women shortboard or longboard.
