Selectabase finds New Business Start Ups Grow by 11.4% in Surprise Turnaround

October 02, 2008 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
More people have started a new business in the last three months than last year. The news appears to defy talk of the worsening economic situation and also bucks the trend of lower than average start up activity seen during the earlier part of the year from January to May.

Figures released today by Selectabase from their Startupsplus marketing list identified 22,824 new businesses starting up from June to August 2008, compared to just 20,849 start ups during June to August 2007, an increase of 2,335 start ups or 11.4%.

Prior to June this year new businesses had been starting up at much lower levels than in 2007. For example new business start ups for the year were down by as much as 25% by the end of May 2008, compared to the same period last year.

Startupsplus is a small business direct marketing tool, which identifies new business start ups across the UK each month, and supplies the data to local businesses for marketing purposes.

Business data from Startupsplus gives one of the most accurate indicators of start up activity in the UK. The company gathers and verifies data on new business activity from a number of sources, and so captures start ups based at home or in an office, and operating as both sole traders and limited companies.

Selectabase has also analysed the Startupsplus data to identify any other trends amongst the increased number of new business start ups. They have discovered that the location of start ups has stayed relatively the same as last year, with new businesses starting up in the Belfast, Birmingham, Manchester and Sheffield postcode areas.

However the types of business to start up over the last three months have been consistently different to last year; top UK business start up is a Hairdresser, second is a Plumber and third is a Builder. Last year Plumbers topped the start up table, along with driving schools and beauty salons.

Another notable omission from the top start ups this year are Estate Agents.
