John P. Fullerton, Founding Partner of Coral Gables-based Fullerton Diaz Architects, has a lot to celebrate this year. Not only will the design veteran be celebrating 30-years at the helm of his revered architectural firm and 40 years in the industry overall, but he was also recently awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in Architecture by the American Institute of Architects Miami Chapter. In an effort to underscore AIA Miami's commitment to public awareness and appreciation of architecture and its related fields, the local chapter handed out 19 awards for outstanding design and 20 community, trade and professional awards to architects, designers, students and community leaders at its 54th Annual design competition in November. The Lifetime Achievement Award is one of AIA's most prestigious acknowledgments and this year, it paid homage to the innovative and successful career Mr. Fullerton has enjoyed for the past 40 years.

"It is an honor to have been chosen as the recipient of such a prestigious award," said Mr. Fullerton. "AIA Miami is a wonderful and important organization and I truly appreciate them recognizing my contributions to the field of architecture."

John began his career in the early 1960's working for large developers near his hometown of Fort Myers, Florida. In 1967 he relocated to Miami and began his career at Spillis, Candela & Partners where he spent a year as a draftsman before forming Harum/Nichols/Fullerton & Associates. After eleven years, John started his own firm, Fullerton Diaz Architects, with partner Julio Diaz and for the last 30 years Fullerton Diaz Architects has created some of the most notable and breathtaking buildings in the Miami skyline. Last year, FDA was awarded the coveted Firm of the Year Award by the AIA, which further cemented John's place as critical player in Miami's architectural community.

His style is eclectic and is apparent in the scope of his portfolio which includes Everglades on the Bay, Murano, Murano Grande, The Palms, Bristol Towers, Coral Gables' War Memorial Youth Center, Ocean Grande, and the Continuum. Under the leadership of both John Fullerton and Julio Diaz, and guided by the philosophy of "Good Design is Good Business," the Fullerton-Diaz team has moved Miami forward with its innovative designs and its focus on excellence. They are thrilled to increase the firm's international presence to Abu Dhabi, Trinidad and Tobago and Honduras.
